FALL 2011 - WINTER 2012
Registration for Winter 2012 opens on Monday, Nov. 14, 2011! Pick up a registration form at the SCERA Center for the Arts, 745 South State, Orem, open 10am-6pm weekdays, call (801) 225-ARTS to register by phone or download and print home school registration form.  Bring the completed form and full payment to the main office of the SCERA Center for the Arts.  There is a $15 cancellation fee per class.

DRAMA

Triple Threat

Fall Semester:

This class is designed to teach your student the ins and outs of being on stage. They will have a great educational experience learning music, choreography, blocking, staging, costuming, auditioning, and other elements of theater. Students will have “hands on” opportunities to explore different techniques and performance styles. As part of the SCERA Youth Theatre program, this class will do an in-class performance (week of Nov. 15-18), perform in the SYT Christmas Spectacular (Dec. 6 and 13, 2011), a Spring Broadway Revue (May 8-9, 2012) and present a one act musical on stage at the end of Winter Semester. 


Acting

An exciting, fast-paced and educational experience which helps students learns the basics of performing, and expressing themselves creatively through stage acting.  Students will focus on voice and diction, improvisation, stage combat, creating characters, and building self-confidence through theater. At the end of Winter Semester, skills taught in class will be presented in a class play or a showcase of monologues and scenes chosen by the students. As part of the SCERA Youth Theatre program, students will do an in-class performance (week of Nov. 15-18), take part in the SYT Christmas Spectacular (Dec. 6 and 13, 2011) and Spring Broadway Revue (May 8-9, 2012). Shakespeare

Learn to understand and perform works from theater’s most distinguished playwright.  Classes will focus on interpreting Shakespearean language, voice and diction, physical comedy, and introductions and understanding of Shakespeare's most classic works.  At the end of Winter Semester, the class will culminate with a performance of a Shakespearean play. As part of the SCERA Youth Theatre program, students will present an in-class performance (week of Nov. 15-18), and also take part in the SYT Christmas Spectacular (Dec. 6 and 13, 2011) and Spring Broadway Revue (May 8-9, 2012). Students of this class will also be eligible to audition for SCERA’s Shakespeare Team which will compete at the October 2011 Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City. Instructor: Alex Barlow


Playwriting

This class will teach the creation of a script, and students will learn various elements and techniques that go into creating their own plays. Take those wild, fun, creative ideas and use role play, improv and other elements of theater to take ideas from your head to paper to a real life play. Instructor: Alex Barlow

Tech Theater

Go behind the scenes at SCERA and learn how to create the magic of live theater by studying set construction, scenic painting, set design, props and more. Students will have hands-on experience building set pieces and props, help with set dressing and painting and learn about lighting, sound and other technical elements for SCERA productions. Beginning Ballroom

This class is for those young dancers that want to give social ballroom dance a try. Learn the steps for Foxtrot, Waltz, Cha Cha, American Swing and Samba. Participants will be eligible to enter Dancesport Competitions at BYU and UVU and will also perform with the SCERA Ballroom Team in their December and May concerts at SCERA. Instructor: Shawn M. Beginning Ballroom

For students a bit older, this class will work on choreographed ballroom routines that build on the basics and add fun dips, lifts and other styles of dancing. Costuming, exciting music and creative choreography make this class a blast! Students will be involved choosing music, costuming and help with creating choreography and will have the opportunity to compete at Dancesport Competitions at BYU and UVU. They will also perform with the SCERA Ballroom Team in their December and May concerts at SCERA.  Instructor: Shawn M. Mortensen

Beginning Jazz/Hip Hop/Ballet/Tap

Fall Semester: Week of September 5-Week of Dec. 12, 2011
Winter Semester: Week of January 9-Week of May 7, 2012

Students will have fun, get some good exercise, learn rhythm and coordination and learn the basics of jazz, hip hop, ballet and tap.  They will show off what they’ve learned in an end of semester performance for family and friends.  Instructor:  Sunny Watts

HIP HOP

Warm Up:  Warm up and stretch major muscle groups
Isolations:  Focus movement on an isolated area.  Head, shoulders, hips, etc.
Condition: Strengthen major muscle groups, sit ups, push-ups, lunges
Across The Floor: Sequenced steps across the floor and short hip hop combinations
Combo: Learn a new hip hop dance combo approximately 1 minute in musical length

JAZZ

Warm Up:  Warm up and stretch major muscle groups
Condition:  Strengthen major muscle groups, sit-ups, push-ups, core muscles and using them in conjunction with each other for proper dance technique
Across the Floor:  Focus on technique of basic jazz turns and leaps moving across the floor
Combo:  Learn a new jazz dance combo approximately 1 minute in musical length
 
BALLET

Ballet Barre: Ballet exercises and steps at the barre, focusing on body placement
Floor Stretch:  Stretches focused on flexibility of leg, hip and turn out muscles
Combo:  Ballet steps focused on footwork and use of upper body, progressing to turns, jumps and ballet combinations

TAP

Warm Up: Basic tap steps in progressing sequence to warm up feet and lower leg muscles. Rhythm combinations to learn music and interpretation of sounds
Across the Floor:  Sequenced tap steps moving across the floor
Combo:  Learn a new tap dance combo approximately 1 minute in musical length

ART & PUPPETRY

Puppet Workshop

Fall Semester: September 5-December 16, 2011

Students will learn about the art of puppetry, make several kinds of puppets and exhibit their creations at the end of the semester in a gallery show at the SCERA Center for the Arts.   Instructor:  Nat Reed

The curriculum at SCERA Art Studios mirrors the requirements listed on the USOE Fine Arts Rainbow Chart. Each class is an art combo class including painting, drawing and pottery in order to adhere to state curriculum. All materials are included in the cost of tuition. At the end of both Fall and Winter semesters, students will participate in an art exhibition held in the main gallery at the SCERA Center for the Arts.  Studio Director/Main Instructor:  Ashley Harvey

GROUP VOICE LESSONS

This class is for teens and adults, and you will receive group voice training and prepare for auditions and performances. You will learn to sing audition pieces in the mix and belt styles.  Vocal, acting and audition techniques will also be taught.  Each student will receive a book of music and a CD for home practice and have the opportunity to sing before a panel of local directors in a mock audition and receive written feedback. There will also be an end-of-semester concert for family and friends.  Instructor: Ruth Ellis

CREATIVE WRITING


Develop your child's imagination and flair for words in this fun writing class that provides a safe creative environment for your child. Students will create believable characters, stories and plots using grammar and scene setting. Participants will showcase their stories in a public reading at the end of the semester.  Instructor:  Nate Evans
